On May 21, 2024, the European Commission issued Directive (EU) 2024/1416, which updated Article 39(a) "On the reduction of cadmium-based semiconductor nanocrystals used in display lighting equipment" in Annex III of the EU RoHS Directive 2011 /65/EU. Cadmium selenide for quantum dots (cadmium for display area <0.2ug/mm2)" exemption clause is valid, and a new 39(b) exemption clause is added. This directive will take effect on the 20th day after the announcement.

Cadmium selenide in downshifting cadmium-based semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots for use in display lighting applications (< 0,2 μg Cd per mm2 of display screen area).

Cadmium selenide used to reduce cadmium-based semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots in display lighting equipment (cadmium <0.2μg/mm2 display screen)

Expires for all categories on 21 November 2025’

Applies to all devices, exempt until November 21, 2025

39(b)

Cadmium in downshifting semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots directly deposited on LED semiconductor chips for use in display and projection applications (< 5μg Cd per mm2 of LED chip surface) with a maximum amount per device of 1 mg.

Used to reduce cadmium in semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots deposited directly on LED semiconductor chips in display and projection applications (LED chip surface cadmium <5 μg/mm2), the maximum dosage per device is 1 mg.
